Math is one of those subjects where the foundation matters enormously. A student who struggles with fractions in 4th grade will struggle with algebra in 7th grade. A student who loses confidence in middle school math often avoids it entirely in high school — closing doors to STEM careers before they've had a chance to open them. Early, consistent math support is one of the highest-leverage investments a Bainbridge Island family can make in their child's education.

The Confidence Gap Is Real

The most common thing we hear from new students at Bainbridge Learning Connections isn't "I don't understand the material." It's "I'm just not a math person." This belief — that math ability is fixed, that some kids have it and others don't — is almost always wrong, and almost always the result of a gap in foundational understanding that was never properly addressed. Given the right support at the right time, nearly every student can succeed in math. Our job is to find where the gap is and fill it.

What K–5 Math Support Looks Like

For younger students, the goal isn't to race ahead — it's to build genuine understanding of the concepts that everything else depends on. Number sense, place value, fractions, multiplication, division — these aren't just elementary school topics, they're the foundation of all the math your child will do for the rest of their academic life. Diane Botefuhr specializes in working with K–8 students at Bainbridge Learning Connections, bringing patience, warmth, and decades of experience to every session. She has a gift for making tricky concepts feel like moments of discovery rather than sources of frustration.

What Middle School Math Support Looks Like

Middle school is often where students hit their first real wall — pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry require a level of abstract thinking that doesn't come naturally to every student at the same time. This is also the age when students start forming lasting beliefs about whether they're "good at math." Eileen Safford works with middle school students through this critical period, building both the skills and the confidence to move forward. More than one student has told her she saved their relationship with their parents — because of all the fights they used to have over math homework before she came along.

When to Seek Help

The best time to start is before there's a problem. If your Bainbridge Island student is keeping up but not really understanding, now is the right time. If they've started to avoid math homework, dread tests, or describe themselves as bad at math, now is definitely the time.

Bainbridge Learning Connections offers one-on-one math tutoring for students from Kindergarten through pre-calculus, right here on Bainbridge Island. Sessions are $75 with no long-term commitment required.
